Baseball is a great sport, but like all sports there are certain risks involved. The more familiar you are with the possible hazards in baseball, the easier it is to prevent problems from occurring. That's why it's essential that everyone has the protective equipment required by their position and follows the proper guidelines. To increase awareness of this issue, we will cover some important baseball safety points in this article.

It's important that coaches and managers be completely aware of any underlying or preexisting conditions a player may have. If an injury hasn't healed it's not a good idea for a player to continue to play. Of course any injury that happens while playing should be immediately checked out. Players don't like being benched so they won't always tell the truth about being injured so it's important for coaches to know when it's the right time to seek medical help. In some cases, such as an ankle sprain or a pitcher with a shoulder injury, to continue playing can make the condition much worse.

Aside from the baseball itself, the most dangerous object in the game is the bat. Players should only swing bats at specified times, and never carelessly. A player who's not at the plate or on deck should not be swinging a bat during a game, as this is the kind of thing that causes accidents. Coaches should reinforce the importance of staying clear of anyone with a bat. Another rule should be no swinging of bats without glancing in all directions first. If everyone is made aware how dangerous bats can be, safety can be maintained and accidents avoided.

Other than helmets there are many other safety measures batters can take to protect themselves. Reducing the impact of the bat meets ball sting can be accomplished with a good batting glove. Of course there are other benefits too such as wrist and hand protection as well as grip perfection. Protect your wrists from pitches with the use of a wrist guard. Consider the use of a mouth guard if your helmet isn't equipped with a facemask. This protects the mouth and teeth, which can easily be damaged by a speeding ball. Because of the dangers posed in the batting position it's important to protect yourself as best you can with as much gear as you can.

Safety should always be an area of concern in baseball, and it's often the little things that make a difference. That's one of the responsibilities of coaches, especially when coaching kids' leagues, as younger players may have to be reminded to wear the right gear and follow safety guidelines. The unexpected can always occur, but the fact is, many baseball accidents are completely preventable if such simple principles are followed.
